Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before booking your tour with Japan Guide Stars.
Booking & Reservation
How do I book a tour?
You can book directly through our website by selecting your preferred tour, choosing your date and group size, and completing the checkout process. You'll receive an instant confirmation email with all the details.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes, we strongly recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance. Our small group tours often sell out, especially during peak seasons (March–May and October–November). Last-minute availability varies by tour.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) through our secure payment system. Payment is processed at the time of booking.
Can I book a private tour?
Absolutely! Many of our tours can be arranged as private experiences for your group. Please contact us with your preferred dates, group size, and any special requirements, and we'll create a custom itinerary for you.
Cancellation & Changes
What is your cancellation policy?
Our standard cancellation policy is as follows:
• Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time
• Less than 24 hours: 100% of the tour price will be charged
Some tours may have specific cancellation terms, which will be displayed on the individual tour page. Bus tours are subject to separate terms — please refer to our Bus Tour Terms & Conditions.
Can I change the date or number of guests?
Yes, modifications are possible subject to availability. Please contact us at least 24 hours before your scheduled tour. We'll do our best to accommodate your request.
What happens if the tour is cancelled due to weather?
Most of our walking tours operate rain or shine — we recommend bringing appropriate clothing. In the rare case of severe weather (typhoon, heavy storm), we will offer a full refund or reschedule at no additional cost. You'll be notified by email at least 2 hours before the tour start time.
On the Day
What should I bring?
We recommend bringing:
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Weather-appropriate clothing (layers recommended)
• A small bag or backpack
• Water bottle
• Cash for personal purchases at local shops and stalls
Where do tours meet?
Each tour has a specific meeting point, usually near a major train station for easy access. The exact meeting location and directions are included in your confirmation email. Your guide will be holding a Japan Guide Stars sign.
What happens if I'm late?
We wait up to 15 minutes past the scheduled start time. If you're running late, please contact us immediately using the phone number in your confirmation email. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds for no-shows.
Are the tours suitable for children?
Most of our tours welcome children, though some experiences (such as bar hopping or sake tasting) are for adults only. Each tour page lists the minimum age requirement and any special considerations. Food tours are especially popular with families.
Is the tour conducted in English?
Yes, all our tours are conducted in English by fluent, locally-based guides. We pride ourselves on guides who are not just translators, but passionate storytellers who can share the real Japan with you.
About Our Tours
What makes your tours different from other operators?
We specialize in small group tours (typically 2–12 guests) led by local experts who live and breathe Japanese culture. We take you beyond the tourist trail to hidden spots, family-run restaurants, and authentic experiences that you simply can't find in a guidebook. With over 8,000 five-star reviews on TripAdvisor, our guests consistently rate us as one of the top tour operators in Japan.
How large are the tour groups?
We keep our groups small — typically 2 to 12 people — to ensure a personalized, intimate experience. This means more time with your guide, easier navigation through narrow streets and local markets, and a more authentic connection with the places we visit.
Are food and drinks included?
This varies by tour. Our food tours include multiple tastings (typically 8–12 dishes). For other tours, meals and drinks are generally not included unless specified on the tour page. Your guide can always recommend great local spots for dining after the tour.
